Established in the year 1989, Saraswati Shishu Mandir Dr. Hedgewar Nagar Barwat Sena Bettiah, Bihar is a Vidya Bharti school that had a very humble beginning. It was through the love and support of well wishers, and local community, that today, it has grown to become one of leading institutions in the area.
In the initial days the school building consisted of only a hut and stood on a donated land given by ex army men and RSS members. It was much later, in the year 1992, that the school started developing at a rapid pace. It got its affiliation to the Central Board of Secondary Education in 1998.
Today the school stands on five and a half acres of land, surrounded by greenery. More than 2500 students study in the school and there are approximately 90 teachers. The school building consists of 3 buildings with 100 classrooms along with a hostel for boys, named ‘Maharishi Valmiki Chatrawas’, housing roughly 200 students. It also has modern science and computer labs, library, conference hall, gym, music room etc. A new administrative building and auditorium is also being built.
The education provided in the school is quite unconventional, and a lot of importance is given to overall development of the students. In the nursery section, children are educated through games and play, instead of books, as this proves to be more enjoyable, and hence more effective mode of education.
For higher classes, smart classes and activity based education are provided alongside traditional education. The students are also given classes on meditation and spirituality with the aim of moral development. Girl students are taught martial arts and self defence as a part of their Women safety program.
Like all Vidya Bharati schools, Saraswati Vidya Mandir Dr. Hedgewar Nagar Barwat Sena Bettiah, is associated with several social and community development work. It runs 16 Ekal Vidyalayas or Sanskar Kendras in nearby slum areas. At these centers every day two hour classes are provided to educate children from economically backward families. All expenses are borne by the school. Students from the school also visit these kendras to share their ideas on health and hygiene.
In the year 2000, the school also started 2 tailoring centers in the nearby areas for skill development among women. More than 1000 women have reaped benefits from these centers so far and have become financially independent.
Apart from social development, the school also lends a helping hand during natural disasters. It also has an eco club, where students are taught about afforestation, rain water harvesting, animal welfare etc through practical training.
The school also has a very active alumni cell , where well established alumni such as Jwala Prasad ji and Sanjay Kumar ji etc are connected. Alumni of the school often come forward to provide career guidance sessions to the students.
Saraswati Shishu Mandir Dr. Hedgewar Nagar Barwat Sena Bettiah, Bihar is one of the finest educational institutions that not only provides exceptional education, but also gives equal importance to social obligations as well.
