Dr. Anil Arya, an alumni from Kuruksheta, Haryana recently shared his story with the Vidya Bharati alumni portal team, whose brief extract has been given below:
Interviewer: Can you please give us a brief background of your academic and professional background so far?
Dr. Arya: I started my schooling at Jai Bahrti Vidya Mandir, Kurukshetra, where I studied till class 8, then from 9th to 11th I studied at SMB. Gita Sr. Sec School, Railway Road, Kurukshetra and did 12th from a school at Panipat. In 2009, I joined my B.Sc course with Physics, Maths and Electronics (Kurukshetra University), which I completed in 2012. After Graduation I started preparing for IIT JAM examinations for higher studies and in the meantime I also completed my B.Ed course in 2013.
I was able to qualify in IIT JAM examinations in Physics, with an all India Rank of 1016. I joined Central University of Punjab, Bathinda for MSc in Physics in 2013. During my MSc, I also qualified my NET and GATE exams. In 2015, I joined as a PhD scholar in Central University of Punjab and was awarded my PhD degree in August 2019. I am working as Assistant Professor at IIHS Kurukshetra.
Interviewer: Why did you choose ‘Physics’ as your field of study?
Dr. Arya: Since class 9, Physics has been my favourite subject. I was highly interested by the fact that how the subject is an integral part of our day to day life, and can provide solutions to a lot of our daily problems, through applications of its concepts. Thus I had decided that I wanted to have a career related to the subject since my school days.
Interviewer: What made you take up teaching as your profession?
Dr. Arya: From a young age I have learnt the importance of serving one’s society and I feel that teaching the next generation of our country’s citizens is one of the noblest things to do. As a teacher one can impart education across all ages of students, from a small child to youths studying in Universities. It also gives the scope to do a lot of social work by teaching children belonging from financially backward families free of cost. So according to me it is one of the best possible ways to serve our society. Apart from the social aspect, this profession also leads to personal growth through continuous acquirement of knowledge. Thus I felt that this profession was in accordance with my ideals in life.
Interviewer: If any Vidya Bharati student would like to do PhD and become a professor, what suggestions would you like to give them?
Dr. Arya: First of all one has to remember that, PhD is not a very difficult degree to get if one is focused and disciplined in nature. During the course one can face different challenges apart from academics and one has to learn to face those hurdles. One of the most important challenges that a PhD scholar faces is keeping patience as it can take a long time to complete the degree.
Interested candidates can opt to qualify for JRF (Junior Research Fellowship) which can provide them with a good opportunity to do their degree.
Interviewer: Are you associated with any kind of social service?
Dr. Arya: I am not formally associated with any kind of society or NGO’s but during my PhD, I used to conduct evening classes for MSc students who would like to take up PhD in future and provide guidance to them.
Interviewer: Did your school have any impact on your life so far?
Dr. Arya: Two of the most important lessons that I learnt from Vidya Bharati is ‘confidence’ and ‘discipline’, which has helped me to grow both in my professional and personal life. The environment at our school was very good and provided me with a strong academic base. Our teachers were very supportive and friendly, which provided the students with optimal conditions to grow and reach out for their respective goals in life. I still follow the lessons that have been taught to me at school and are an integral part of my personality.
Interviewer: Would you like to give any message to your school and its students?
Dr. Arya: First of all I would like to thank all my teachers for guiding me and helping me to achieve my professional goals. My younger brother is a student of SMB Gita, and I can see from my own experience, how the school is constantly improving itself in all aspects. I wish that they continue in the path of excellence in the future as well.
For the students, I would like to urge them to give their primary focus on education and make their base strong so that they can move towards their life goals easily. Apart from education they should take up an extracurricular activity that they are interested in and would help them in future. For example, I joined NCC during my school days and it has helped me to learn a lot of soft skills.
Before ending my interview, I would like to thank my school once again and I would love to mentor and guide Vidya Bharti students to the best of my ability.
We thank Dr. Anil Arya for taking out time and sharing his thoughts with the Vidya Bharati community.
