Subhranshu Nayak, a class 12 student looks like any other boy of his age in his village, but behind his inconspicuous demeanor, hides an extraordinarily brilliant mind and strong will power.
Subhranshu hails from Hulursinga village in Angul district of Odisha and is a student of Saraswati Sishu Vidya Mandir, Gandhi Marg, Angul. He is the son of Shri Laxman Nayak, who makes and sells bags. In spite of financial constraints, Subhranshu never compromised on his dreams and had the full support of his family.
His idea of creating an auto-controlled drone capable of self navigation, was sparked by Bollywood film ‘3 Idiots’. Later, he came to know through ‘YouTube’ about a person from Hyderabad who had developed a drone model and got selected in NASA competition. This inspired him to make his own model, that had the potential to reach out to people in need of immediate medical aid in remote areas. He named his drone ‘Mavic’ that could reach places which are inaccessible for a doctor. Through the drone a patient or injured person can receive first aid and also consult a doctor via the camera installed on the device.
Subhranshu had no intention of resting on his laurels after development of his complex drone system and had his sight aimed at participating for ‘NASA Space Settlement Contest’ which is being sponsored by NASA Ames Research Center since 1994.
This annual contest is open for students ages eleven to eighteen from all over the world. Individuals can compete as individuals or as part of a team. The goal of this contest is to have students learn about science and teamwork while working on projects to develop space settlement designs. Students submit a report about their designs to NASA Ames, and the reports are judged by aerospace professionals.
Subhranshu uploaded his project on NASA website and four days later he received the news that he has been selected to participate in the competition. Subhranshu’s modern drone design bagged 2nd position from among thousands of projects submitted from all over the world and he became one of the two students from India who were invited to visit NASA’s Space Settlement Centre at Washington to give a detailed briefing of their projects on December 1st, 2019.
Subhranshu perfectly exemplifies the saying , “ Where this a will, there is a way”. Vidya Bharti Purv Chatra Parishad is proud of Subhranshu’s achievements and wishes him well in all his future endeavors.
