Resident of Dinhata in Cooch Behar district of West Bengal, Souvik Deb is a Vidya Bharati alumnus and Secretary of ‘Praktan Vidyarthi Sangh’ (Vidya Bharati Alumni council) who has been working tirelessly since 2011 to make the alumni group of Dinhata strong and their presence felt. He is a believer of strength in unity and utilizes the power of like minded alumni members to bring about positive changes in the area, together. Recently he shared his story via an interview.
Mr. Deb is an alumni of Sarada Shishu Tirtha, Madan Mohan Para, Dinhata in Cooch Behar. He had studied in the school till class 4. He passed his 10th board examination from MSS High School in Gopal Nagar and then shifted to Dinhata High School to complete his 11th and 12th. After completion of his schooling, he did his graduation in English (Hon.) and then went on to gain his D.El.Ed degree from Nigam Nagar Nigamananda Primary Teachers Training Institute. Since 2017, he has been teaching at Kendriya Vidyalaya Coochbehar and pursuing his B.Ed degree in correspondence from IGNOU.
When asked about his childhood school, he went on to say that if he spoke, how life changing his experience at his school was, he might sound biased. He would rather talk about the core values of Vidya Bharati that makes each and every school under the institution across the country equally unique. Mr. Deb pointed out that if any one asked, each and every alumni of Vidya Bharati will tell that how their school has imbued them with love for their culture, heritage and nation.
He fondly remembered how their teachers formed strong bonds with all the students through their support and never ending patience that even after passing out from the school, all of the alumni remembered them with utmost respect. In fact, now when he is working as a teacher himself, he tries to emulate his teachers and hopes that he can instil the same sense of nation building in his students as well.
While speaking enthusiastically about his work as Secretary of ‘Praktan Vidyarthi Sangh’, Mr. Deb said that since the inception of the group in 1995, the alumni council in Dinhata was like a close-knit family and actively participated in different social causes together. After becoming the secretary, he realised that to maintain the close bond among all alumni members, especially those who live outside the area, it was important to meet and come together at least once in a year. Although they are well connected via social media, he started the yearly event of ‘Bijoya Sammilani’ 5 years back so that all members along with their teachers can come together, reconnect and exchange ideas during the holidays after Durga Puja. They also celebrate the event of ‘Rakhi Bandhan’ in a similar fashion.
The alumni council is also associated with several social projects like tree plantation drives, development of literacy etc. Recently the group has been involved with relief work related Covid 19 pandemic.
Before ending the conversation, as a teacher he urged all students to remember the lessons taught at their school and become nation builders in their future.
Vidya Bharati Purv Chatra thanks Mr. Souvik Deb for sharing his thoughts and experiences with the community.
