When the world is still discovering the importance of disciplined lifestyle, spirituality and physical activity towards maintaining a healthy mind and body, Indian culture has been incorporating the same since time immemorial.
Recently while speaking about his experiences, Vidya Bharati alumnus, Mr. Dinesh Sati of Saraswati Sishu Mandir, Gopeshwar, shared his views on the necessity of Indian cultural practices towards maintaining a well balanced lifestyle. The extract of his interview is as follows:
Interviewer : Kindly give us a brief background of your academic and professional journey.
Mr. Sati : I studied in Saraswati Shishu Mandir, Gopeshwar, Uttarakhand, till 1986 and then did my high school and intermediate studies from Govt Inter College Gopeshwar. I have always been drawn towards the reasoning part of Physics, so for graduation, I got admitted to Government Post Graduate College Gopeshwar, from where I completed my B. Sc in Physics and Maths. I did my M. Sc in Physics from the same institution in 1999. Finally I did my PhD from Gurukul Kangri University Haridwar.
I worked as a teacher at Government Intermediate College Joshimath where I taught Science and Maths. I went to Lehigh University, Pennsylvania, USA for 6 months as a part of my experimental work. After completing my PhD , presently I am working as an Assistant Professor, Physics at Government PG College Gopeshwar, Uttarakhand. The best part of my present profession, is that I get to be innovative while teaching my students, which makes studies interesting and enjoyable for them.
Interviewer : How did your school impact your life?
Mr. Sati : I spent my initial years studying at S.S.M Gopeshwar. I feel that the importance given to teaching Indian cultural practices as a part of the overall education, is highly effective towards making the children, well grounded , socially responsible adults, having a balanced outlook in life.
Most of us are aware that a lot of simple practices followed in Indian culture have scientific logic behind them. Practice of Yoga, morning prayers, showing respect towards your elders , chanting of mantras, maintaining proper time for studies, sports and hobbies etc all lead to proper physical and mental development of the students.
Today as an adult, I fully realise how all these practices taught by my school during my childhood have helped to shape my personality for the better.
Also I feel that my school has helped me to get closer to my roots and developed the sense of respect for my country, as well as for the heroes who have made immense sacrifices for the independence that we enjoy today.
At my school, all students and 'acharyas', were more like a family, than merely a part of an institution.
Interviewer : Are you associated with any kind of social work?
Mr. Sati : Yes, from childhood we have been taught to give back to society, in whatever capacity possible. I try to help whenever someone is in need. Also I regularly donate computers, furniture, sports equipment etc to schools, so that the next generation have all facilities available for their complete development.
