Vidya Bharati alumni Shivam Rai joins 'Sadhhana Foundation' to raise awareness on the importance of organ donation

In India as per 2015 statistics, 0.5 million people die due to lack of organ donation. Only 0.08% of Indians donate their organs when compared with 70%–80% of Spaniards and Belgians. Though organ donation from deceased donors is slowly gaining momentum in India, it still falls far short of the national demand.

Several reasons can be attributed to this dismal scenario, such as:

• Shortage of infrastructure equipped for organ transplantation.

• Lack of  family consent as family members refuse to organ donation of brain dead individuals.

• Superstitions and misconceptions among the general population

• Lack of education and awareness regarding importance and process of organ donation etc.

One of the main ways of increasing the donation process is generation of public awareness. 

Realising the problem, Shivam Rai, an alumnus of Saraswati Shishu Vidya Mandir Inter College, Khadiya Sonebhadra, Uttar Pradesh, joined an organisation named 'Sadhana Foundation' which aimed towards raising public awareness regarding organ donation.

Shivam is an ex student of  Saraswati Shishu Vidya Mandir, where he studied till class 2 and completed his schooling from  Saraswati Vidya Mandir in 2014. Presently he is working in a private sector outsourcing company in NCL Amlori, Singrauli as a site supervisor.

He has been associated with "Sadhana Foundation" for the past 1 year as district media in-charge. The organisation is headquartered in Varanasi and has branches across India. It’s main aim is to develop public awareness regarding the importance of blood and organ donation, specifically for financially backward populations who often cannot pay the high prices for such life saving medical facilities. Since its inception, 8 years back, the organization has won several prestigious awards for its exceptional work.

While speaking with Vidya Bharati Purv Chatra team Shivam expressed his gratitude to his schools for developing the sense of  humility and service in him alongside education. He further went on to explain how Vidya Bharati is different from other educational institutions and hence all alumni grow up to be well grounded individuals who are connected with their cultural roots and are nationalist at heart. He also thanked his teachers for their patient guidance during his school days.
