‘The Guru is the means of realisation. There is no knowledge without a teacher.’ - Swami Vivekananda
Not everyone can become a teacher. It takes immense dedication, patience, understanding, empathy, good interpersonal skills and strong work ethics to become one.
In Vidya Bharati schools students are taught to respect their teachers and follow the path shown by them. Hence all the teachers have the added responsibility to become good role models and exceptional leaders to their students as well.
Dr. Gargi Sharma, teacher in Gita Niketan Sr. Sec School at Kurukshetra, Haryana is a person who embodies all the essential qualities of an excellent teacher and is an inspiration to her students. For the past 24 years, her work has reflected her commitment towards her profession. Her stellar work was appreciated and recognised by HRD Ministry in the year 2015 due to unexceptional performance of her students in C.B.S.E Board examinations.
Aside of her professional achievements, the PhD (Hindi) degree holder, has several accomplishments to her name. She ranked first in her M.Phil (Hindi) degree examination in 2001 and is a gold medalist of Kurukshetra University. She was certified by National Science Drama Festival organised by the Council of Science Museums in 2006 for script writing and her self composed poems were published in ‘Jahanvi’.
According to Dr Sharma, the famous quote of Chanakya : “An educated person is respected everywhere. Education beats the beauty and the youth”, had inspired her to take up teaching as her profession. Since the last 24 years, she has left no stone unturned to inculcate moral values among her students with the aim of turning them into strong pillars of this country. Despite having required administrative qualities she did not join as the Principal of the school so that she can stay true to her profession.
Dr Sharma believes in teaching through example, so to install the importance of social service, she accompanies her students in their visit to neighbouring houses to ask for donations to help the victims of natural calamities. At a personal level she follows the concept that one should donate 10% of his/her income on good deeds, public benefit as mentioned in ‘Skanda Puran’ and thus donates generously on ‘Samarpan Divas’ every year for the upliftment of the downtrodden.
Dr Gargi says that she might be a teacher and Vidya Bharati has taught her a lot during her association with the institution. It was after joining Gita Niketan Sr. Sec School, she learnt the importance of nationalisation, Indianization and spiritualization, which she feels have made her a better teacher.
Lastly she wanted to share the following message with all Vidya Bharati students :
“Never shun the ideals and morals that you have learnt from Vidya Bharati no matter how successful you have become in your career.”
She feels that Vidya Bharati is trying its hardest to prepare an idealistic future generation, but still has a long way to go.
Vidya Bharati Purv Chatra Parishad is extremely thankful to Dr Gargi Sharma for sharing her inspirational story with the community.
