Most of the Vidya Bharati schools are not only centers of education, but have become an integral part of the surrounding community, ushering in development in every sphere of communal life.

A perfect embodiment of such a school is Bharat Bharati H.S School, Jamthi Betul or Bharat Bharati Awasiya Vidyalaya in Madhya Pradesh. Located amidst picturesque mountain ranges of Satpura, the Bharat Bharati campus consists of school buildings, state of the art hostels, vocational training centers and much more. Established in the year 1959, it is one of the premier residential schools in Madhya Pradesh.

Apart from general students, the school also houses students from scheduled caste and scheduled tribes, so that they can get equal educational opportunity.

The school is known for its quality education and the students have a 100% pass out rate. Among all the other facilities, the school has 3 digitized classrooms that provide education through audio visual aids. Recently the school has started agricultural studies from class 11, with the aim of growing the next generation of modern farmers armed with scientific knowledge.

As a part of its social commitment, the school is associated with several developmental works few of which are as follows:

  • Vocational Training -  Within the campus, Bharat Bharati Shiksha Samiti has set up a vocational training centre for tribal youths. Book binding, screen printing, ceramic art, painting, sewing, pressed cement block making, handicrafts etc are taught to the students by qualified instructors. Free education and accommodation is also provided to approximately 40 such youths by the Samiti.

  • Organic agriculture -  As a part of a multipurpose project initiated by Bharat Bharati Shiksha Samiti, immense stress is given towards development of organic agriculture in the nearby areas. Approximately 360 farmers from about 18 development blocks of Rajgarh, Harda, Hoshangabad and Betul districts have become associated with the project organised in collaboration with the Madhya Pradesh Agriculture and Horticulture Department. Under the project advanced farming techniques, composting , use of organic fertilizers and insecticides etc are taught. Recently the students of the agricultural studies have started participating in this experimental project. Efforts are also being made to make farming more ecologically sustainable as well as less labour intensive.

Also every year approximately 1000 rural forest dwellers are given training on use and production of organic manure.

  • Environmental conservation:  Like most of the Vidya Bharati schools environmental protection is an important aspect of the school’s yearly planning. Systems like rain water harvesting and waste water treatment within the school campus have not only resulted in provision of clean water for the use within the school campus but also been able to provide water for irrigation to nearby farmers, throughout the year. This step has helped the farmers to reduce the use of groundwater for agriculture.

Also recently the school in association with ONGC, has successfully helped to install Solar powered induction units for cooking in 74 households in the tribal village of Bancha. This unique project has resulted in reduced consumption of forest wood, reduced physical labour and less pollution.

In a separate project, with the  aim of water conservation the school has helped to construct soak pits to collect rain water and waste water from every household, that helps to clean the water, before letting it seep into the groundwater, resulting in diminished  surface runoff and increasing the level of the groundwater in the area.

With the help from Bharat Bharati Shiksha Samiti, Bancha in Betul Madhya Pradesh has become an exemplary village not only in the state, but in the entire country. Moreover all this has been achieved without any kind of government aid.

  • Laboratories and manufacturing units for making ‘Chyawanprash’ and textiles, by the tribal youths are also run within the campus, which has helped to provide them with an alternative source of income.

Thus Bharat Bharati Awasiya Vidyalaya has proved itself to be not only an exceptional educational institution, but also as a beacon of community development.
