India is spread over a vast geographical area encompassing varied physiographic diversity. Such geographic variability, combined with high population density and low preparedness in the face of natural calamities, makes people susceptible to life and property damage when crisis strikes.
In 2019, Kerala was hit by a second flood after the destructive calamity that had shaken the state last year. Along with extremely heavy rain, an analysis of the floods shows that the huge damage caused by the floods could be linked to the rampant destruction of the Western Ghats, which covers about half of Kerala.
In the month of August, the devastating flood struck Kerala. In spite of thousands of people being evacuated from the affected areas, approximately one hundred people died. Along with life loss the damage done to property and livelihood was extensive. Many were left homeless and had to take refuge in relief camps.
In time of this crisis, people from across India came forward to help those in need. Several Vidya Bharati schools distributed food and basic necessities to those who were in need. The school students pitched in to give voluntary services, whenever the requirement arose.
Among all these crisis the story of a small boy Aarav Jaykumar, exemplifies the spirit of Vidya Bharati and the entire nation as a whole. Arav is an Upper KG student of Saraswathy Vidyanikethan (Chengamanad ), Kerala. He was saving his money for over a year to buy a bi-cycle. When he saw his school collecting food and clothes to distribute among flood victims, he donated his entire savings, worth around 4000 rupees, to the fund without any hesitation.
This selfless act from a child shows the strength of moral values with which he has been imbibed by his family and school.
