In India with only 65.46% literacy rate among women, the concept of financial literacy is a far fetched idea. Furthermore in our country most of the time women do not get to participate much in the financial decisions of the family. The situation is more severe in rural India.
In this modern age, where we see women leading at every possible front, financial planning is a critical aspect for them to reach their personal as well as professional objectives, without being dependent on anyone. Moreover, the participation of women in the economy will not only contribute to their own well-being, but also add to the nation's economic growth.
Prakhar Kumar Pandey an alumnus of Saraswati Vidya Mandir Deoria, who works as an Area Manager in a Microfinance Bank, took personal initiative to spread financial literacy among the uneducated rural women with the intent of making them financially independent.
Till now Prakhar has helped to educate more than 1000 women through bank sponsored programs. Women who were previously completely unaware of banking and financial facilities, are now running small enterprises of their own independently after receiving training. Prakhar also organizes workshops for women belonging to rural and urban economically backward families. Presently he is working in Ludhiana, Patiala, Sangrur, Mansa and Barnala districts of Punjab.
Apart from providing women with financial literacy, Prakhar has also donated for development of schools and building of toilets for ‘anganwadis’. In the past five years, approximately twelve such projects have been completed with his help. He has also been honoured by several Ludhiana schools and NGOs for his noteworthy social service work.
Prakhar lives by the motto “If you are earning from society then you should pay back to the society”. When asked about the inspiration behind his social work, Prakhar goes on to say, that during his school days he had participated in several social events from which he got motivated to give back to society. His teacher ‘Guruji’ M.S Golwalkar also had a great contribution towards developing his helping attitude. Prakhar keeps in touch with his schools and donates regularly towards school development.
He wanted to share the following message for all Vidya Bharati students :
“Don’t be shy about your background. From where you have come never matters, set your dreams high because no one will see from where you all have started, everyone is interested to know where you have reached and your journey will become a motivational story for them".
The alumni community of Vidya Bharati is full of inspiring individuals like Prakhar.
