For the past several decades, one of the major hurdles faced by India has been ‘Undernutrition’ and ‘Hunger’. As per 2018 Global Hunger Index, India ranks 103rd out of 119 qualifying countries. With a score of 31.1, India suffers from a level of hunger that is serious. According to UNICEF, India held 10th spot among countries with the highest number of underweight children in the world.
For Dr. Nilesh Malviya an alumni of Saraswati Vidya Mandir, Mahakalpuram Ujjain, and a veterinary doctor by profession, the sight of people begging for food, always disturbed him immensely. With the intention to help hungry people around him, he set up a group of like minded people under the name of ‘Mission Aanpurna’.
Mission Annapurna aims to help the poor who struggle to feed themselves even one square meal a day. The group consists of 10 members including Dr. Nilesh Malviya, Manish Vishvkarma, Pintu and Tushar, who circulate food in Dewas District of Madhya Pradesh every Sunday from 7.30 p.m. This circulation of food takes place near Railway stations, bus stands and Chamunda Mata Mandir. Group members buy vegetarian food from hotels and distribute them on bikes.
The group has expanded itself via marketing in whatsapp where their relatives and friends donate extra food from family occasions. This has dual impact of reducing food wastage and feeding the hungry.
Dr. Nilesh dreams of growing his group and feed as many people as possible. The story of Dr. Nilesh serves as an inspiration to others.
