World Blood Donor Day is celebrated around the world every year on 14th June to thank voluntary unpaid blood donors for their life-saving gifts of blood and to raise awareness regarding the need for regular blood donations. Millions of lives are saved every year by transfusion of blood and blood products in patients suffering from life-threatening conditions, and during complex medical and surgical procedures. It also has an important, life-saving role in maternal and child care or during the emergency response to man-made and natural disasters. An adequate supply of blood and blood products can only be ensured through regular donations by voluntary, unpaid blood donors.
According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), providing safe and adequate blood should be an integral part of every country’s national health care policy and infrastructure. The organization estimates that approximately 1% to 3% of a country’s population should actively donate blood to meet the demands, yet many countries are far off meeting even the one percent mark. India with an approximate fifteen percent deficit is such a country that faces acute blood shortage.
When Sandeep Vishnoi, an alumnus of Adarsh Vidhya Mandir Aau, Jodhpur, Rajasthan was in college he went through a harrowing experience. One of his acquaintance was admitted in hospital and he witnessed first hand the difficulty faced by family members in arranging blood for the patient. The incident affected him immensely and prompted him to take action.
Four years ago in 2015 Sandeep started ‘The Life Saver’s Foundation’, in Jodhpur as an emergency service to connect blood donors with those in need. In the initial days Sandeep faced several hurdles. As Jodhpur consists of mostly rural community, people were suspicious of the organization and often refused help. Armed with unwavering belief in his aim and help from his family and friends, Sandeep was able overcome every difficulty and grow the organization to 5000 members across India with more than 1000 active donors.
The organization mainly operates on social media platforms like facebook and whatsapp. They also have a helpline number. People in need can contact the organisation via whatsapp or through a call, where they are immediately connected with the nearest donor or blood bank, who in turn helps the family in crisis. According to Vishnoi, the organization has been formed teams in several Indian metropolis like Jaipur, Delhi, Jodhpur, Ahmedabad and Mumbai. Life Saver’s Foundation's blood helpline team is ready to donate blood round the clock and work in day and night shifts, so that blood can be made available to the needy on time.
To promote voluntary blood donation and to motivate more people to donate blood, the Foundation is also runs a unique ‘Celebration of Happiness’ program, which encourages people to donate in celebration of life events like birthdays, anniversaries, weddings, death anniversaries of ancestors etc. This program has proved to be quite successful.
Vishnoi, along with his team members also organize frequent awareness campaigns busting the myths related to blood donation, so that more people come forward to donate blood regularly.
The RAS aspirant Vishnoi is ardent follower of Swami Vivekananda and believer of community service. He hopes that in the near future more Indian youth will become engaged in social work leading to a stronger stable nation.
