Shubham Kushwah an alumnus of Krishna Chandra Gandhi Saraswati Vidhya Mandir, Mathura in UP was taught in his school, that self development cannot take place without development of others around oneself. This teaching stuck with him and the sentiment of “sabka sath sabka vikas”, became his life’s motto. From very early on in his life, he became disheartened to see the adverse effects on children born to poverty stricken families. Prevalence of hunger and lack of education robbed these children the opportunity to rise above their circumstances.
According to UNICEF, Over 385 million children live in extreme poverty across the world. Of these, India is home to 30 percent, the highest in South Asia. It has been estimated that approximately one third of Indian population lives below the poverty line and children belonging to this strata, stand the highest risk of physiological and emotional underdevelopment.
With the hope to help as many of these children as possible, Shubham joined and became president of the NGO ‘Jyoti Nirmalam Society’, which has been working in India for over 5 years, focusing on alleviating poverty and social exclusion, through well-planned, comprehensive programmes in health, education, livelihoods and disaster preparedness. This organisation though it’s different programs directly and indirectly affects the lives of approximately 1500 children, belonging to poverty stricken families.
Few of the core areas in which the organisation is engaged are : Education, Orphanage, Health, as well as cultural and environmental development. They have successfully run several donation campaigns for education, health and provision of other basic amenities to the underprivileged children.
Shubham believes that the multi-faceted approach is the best way to bring an all round development among the children and hopes that when they grow up, they will be able to break free from the chains of poverty that had been holding them back, their entire life.
