India has the highest percentage of youths in the world. In the modern age, huge importance has been given to the power of this population and a lot is expected from them. They are hailed as the ‘change makers’ around the globe, but Indian culture has another great advantage that most of the others fail to harness and that is our elderly population.

Traditionally, Indian culture consider the elderly as guardians of knowledge and wisdom. Thus they hold positions of respect in society. When the determination of youth and knowledge of elders come together, they are capable of sweeping changes.

Pavan Kumar Sharma, an alumnus of Adarsh Vidya Mandir Secondary School, Tijara, Rajasthan, recognizing this potential, started an organisation, ‘Nava Yuvak Mandal-Jangir Brahmin Samaj’, with the aim of bringing social change.

Pavan, who is a technical instructor at Ranjit ITI Tijara, grew his passion for social work during his school days, which continued in his adult life as well and prompted him to start the organization ‘Nava Yuvak Mandal-Jangir Brahmin Samaj’ in Tijara.  This organisation is composed of two groups:

  • First group consists of Senior, elder members who are responsible for identifying social issues in need of intervention and make strategies to tackle the problem.

  • Second group consists of youths who are responsible for executing the plans.

The organisation works in several areas such as environmental protection, provision of food to the needy, awareness generation on the importance of saving electricity, child education and much more. According to Pawan, the involvement of both elderly and the youth is the reason behind the success of his organisation.

Pavan feels that doing service for the betterment of the society is a part of every citizen’s moral and social responsibility. It should not be considered as something special but treated as a norm.  He says that helping others gives him immense satisfaction and is a source of pride.

According to Pawan, it was his school that inspired him to stand beside the needy and he will continue to do so, as long as possible. He would also like to urge the Indian youth to never lose their humanity over wealth.
